Philaster Edmund Buell was born September 8, 1842 in Delaware County Ohio, the last of seven children of Philaster Buell and Lucy Case. In November of 1865 he married Mary Katherine Kaiser. By 1874 they had three children.
He first enlisted as a private in the 86th Infantry, Company C, on May 27, 1862, at age 19, and was mustered out on Sept. 25, 1862 in Camp Chase Ohio. He then enlisted in the 48th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company B on Sept. 5, 1864, at age 21. Philaster Buell was transferred to the 83rd OVI in January of 1865. He served with his oldest brother, Grandley O. Buell. One of his sisters, Lavinia Buell, married Jay Bartlett Willis, who also served in the 48th, along with two of his brothers, Plyn A. Willis, and Rollin K. Willis.
Between 1890 and 1892 he was employed as the captain of a fire department in Columbus Ohio. Philaster Buell died November 14, 1916 of nephritis and is buried in Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio.
