My great-great grandfather, James H. Van Pelt was born Dec., 1827 in Highland Co., OH, the son of Ittia and Sarah McCollum Van Pelt. He married Jane Farris, April 18, 1849 in Highland Co., OH.
Leaving behind his wife and four children, Lorenzo Dow, Mary S., Uriah H., and Sarah S., he heeded the call of his country, enlisting at Lynchburg, OH, Sept. 15, 1861 as a private in Co. C, 48th Regt. of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
April 6, 1862, James received a gunshot wound to his right knee at the battle of Shiloh. He was discharged July 16, 1862 because of disability. Upon his discharge, he returned to Highland Co. to his wife and four children, then moved to Warren Co., IN to join his parents and siblings who had moved there about 1855.
James and Jane had three more children, Samantha Elizabeth, Olive, and Annie Lillie, in Warren Co., IN.
In Jan., 1871, James applied for a disability pension for his gunshot wound, which was granted in Oct. 1872 for $2 per month.
James died May 18, 1911 in Warren Co., IN and is buried in West Lebanon Cemetery, Warren Co., IN.
